Ski resorts in the region are anxiously watching El Nino reports and most have tentatively pegged to open between Nov. 20th and Nov. 28th. The average snowfall for Lake Tahoe is 430 inches. How much we can expect this year is anybody’s guess, but here are a few sites where you can get up-to-date snow reports.

TIME TO WINTERIZE!!!

Your water system is the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to winterizing, but there are several items to put on your “to-do” list before winter comes roaring in to stay.
  • Have chimneys and stovepipes inspected and cleaned.
  • Have heating appliances cleaned and serviced.
  • Inspect snow blower and take maintenance steps.
  • Install snow stakes.
  • Check weather stripping around doors and use caulk on openings or outlets around pipes, foundation, windows, etc.
  • Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and alarms.
  • Check your roof for missing shingles, shakes or damaged metal. Check around roof vents also.

Now, on to that water system:

  • Disconnect outside hoses from water spigots and store them away. Drain irrigation system.
  • Put foam rubber insulation around hot and cold water pipes to increase efficiency.
  • In empty houses, set the thermostat at 50 degrees … this applies to vacationing homeowners as well as tenants when they leave!
  • If you are a second homeowner or if you are heading out for a long vacation, consider turning off your water completely when you leave. Open all faucets and flush all toilets to empty the excess water from lines and tanks.
